In 1108 Russian duke Vladimir Monomah built a fortress, protected from the south by river Klyazma, from the south by the River Lebed, and hills from the west and east. The new fortress was named after its founder – Vladimir. In 1150 the son of Ury Dolgoruky, Andrey Bogolubsky moved the capital of Russia from Kiev to Vladimir, and in 1158 construction of the city’s main buildings began. After the fire of 1238 the city lost its importance and former beauty and no longer remained the capital.

Today Vladimir is one of the most beautiful cities in the Moscow region and has great industrial and cultural potential. It has two universities – a pedagogical and a polytechnical one. Attractions include the Golden Gates, a rare monument to military engineering. These were built in 1164, however only the two supporting walls of the structure have been saved; everything else has been reconstructed. Another marvelous monument is the Uspensky Cathedral (pictured), which draws everyone’s attention due to its spectacular hilltop location.
