Red Square is the best-known square in Moscow, located in the middle of the city. To the west of the square is the Moscow Kremline, to the east the department store GUM and Chinatown, to the north the Historical Museum and the Cathedral of the Icon of the Holy Mother, and to the south St. Basil’s (Pokrovsky) Cathedral. The length of the square is 330 meters, the width, 70 meters. On the square is located a monument to Minin and Pozharsky (see Moscow History) and Lenin’s Mausoleum. Next to the mausoleum is the cemetery near the Kremlin wall, where important personalities of the Soviet period, including political and military, are interred. Apart from this in the 1920s and 1930s foreign communists are also buried there.
