The foundation of the Bolshoi Theater is connected with the blossoming forth of Russian national culture of the end of the XVIII century. For many years the best samples of home ballet and opera classics have made their appearance there. The chorus of the Theater has also always been up to the mark. The prize-winners of many prestigious competitions form it. “Swan Lake” has become the first premiere of the 2001-2002 season. Yuri Grigorovitch has created a new choreographic version of the ballet, which was put on the stage by him in 1969. A prominent French choreographer Rolan Petit staged his ballet “The Three Cards” based on Pushkin’s “Queen of Spades” specially for the Bolshoi Theater. The 1944 canonical version of “Eugene Onegin” was returned to the repertoire of the theater. The performance was produced by a master of the home opera theater Boris Pokrovsky. G. Verdi’s death centenary was commemorated by “Nabukko”, which was staged in Moscow for the first time.
