State Academic Bolshoi Theater | Áîëüøîé Òåàòð
M Teatralnaya, Okhotny Ryad
The foundation of the Bolshoi Theater is connected with the blossoming forth of Russian national culture of the end of the XVIII century. It was exactly then when the first professional actors made their appearance. The interest for the secular music, opera and ballet grew. The world recognition of the Russian vocal school refers to the end of the XIX century – beginning of the XX century. At that time the following great musicians participated in theater performances: Shalyapin, Sobinov, Nezhdanova. Chaikovsky and Rakhmaninov conducted their operas. They opened a new epoch in the history of the Russian vocal singing school. Famous ballet-masters Petipat, Sen-Leon, Perro staged their performances in the Bolshoi Theater. The Bolshoi Theater was built in 1825 by Osip Bove. A five-tier hall can seat more than 2000 spectators. A big stage permits to perform plays magnificently decorated. For many years the best samples of home ballet and opera classics have made their appearance there. The chorus of the Theater has also always been up to the mark. The prize-winners of many prestigious competitions form it. “Swan Lake” has become the first premiere of the 2001-2002 season. Yuri Grigorovitch has created a new choreographic version of the ballet, which was put on the stage by him in 1969. A prominent French choreographer Rolan Petit staged his ballet “The Three Cards” based on Pushkin’s “Queen of Spades” specially for the Bolshoi Theater. The 1944 canonical version of “Eugene Onegin” was returned to the repertoire of the theater. The performance was produced by a master of the home opera theater Boris Pokrovsky. G. Verdi’s death centenary was commemorated by “Nabukko”, which was staged in Moscow for the first time. More than 200 years have passed since the foundation of the Bolshoi Theater, which has become the symbol of Russian art.

The Moscow Musical Theatre was founded in 1941 as a result of merger of two opera troupes of K.S. Stanislavsky and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko. They abandoned the aesthetic principles of the pompous opera in their work and accepted the realistic principles worked out by the Art Theatre. They constructed their performances according to the laws of drama. The theatre also had a ballet troupe created by the Bolshoi Theatre dancer, Viktorina Kriger, in the 1930s. Today, the theatre is proud to bear the names of its founders.
