Sokolniki Park | Ñîêîëüíèêè
M Sokolniki
The park is a fine example of landscape art. The park was opened in 1931. It occupies the territory of almost 600 hectares of the former Sokolnichya grove. In the XVI-XVII centuries the grove was a part of a huge forest tract which was used by Russian tsars for falconry. At the end of the XVII century the Southern part of the forest was cut down in order to be used for military manoeuvres. The Northern part was given the name of Sokolnichya grove at the beginning of the XVIII century. It became a place for festive gathering on public holidays. Peter I started to put it in order: the first opening was cut through. Now it is known as Maysky opening, because in the 1890s first worker’s meetings and mayovkas (celebrations of the May, 1) took place there. In the 40s of the XIX century a radial lay-out was put into effect. Seven radial openings dispersed symmetrically from the central circle. Gradually the rays turned into seven streets. There was a system of cascade ponds in the park: six Putyaev’s ponds with a boating station and a beach, five Oleny ponds, Maysky ponds, the Dog’s pond, the Golden pond. In 1878 the park became public. In 1917 the park became a part of the city. In 1973 Palace of Sports “Sokolniki” seating 11 000 people was built. And in 1974 Palace of Sports and Games with a winter football field was erected. A Green theater seating 500 people, a Variety theater, a dance hall and a side-show town are open in the park. There are hospitals, the famous Forest School, kindergartens, rest homes and also a complex consisting of 22 pavilions for carrying out international exhibitions on the territory of the park.
